[edit] Numbers

Numbers are redundant. This is a navigational templates. Please look at other such templates to see that the convention is NOT to have numbers there. --Ragib 19:17, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

  • For avoiding confusion, separate templates might be created for both Ex-BIT Institute Universities and List of Public Colleges under National University.--NAHID 17:44, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How?

Government Saadat College is a university? How, and since when? Aditya Kabir 13:59, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Saadat College is not a university. It never was, and probably will never be. Please, stop adding it to a list of universities. Aditya Kabir 03:50, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] MIST

first of all thats not an university.its an institution.the system of taking teachers or personnel is performed by the p.s.c of bangladesh(see mist official website).i dont think there should be any such doubt about this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.110.21.195 (talk) 17:46, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Is MIST a public university? To the best of my knowledge, it is not. It is a private educational organization run by Army. (My friends used to teach there, and get paid at hefty pvt univ rates. --Ragib 07:18, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

  • I think it is. One of my friend (Munim) who participated in MIST, said it's a public university. And a article Military institute of science and technology is already exist here (very poor shape). Most probably written by a student from MIST.--NAHID 07:58, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
I doubt this. Public universities are funded via UGC, and it doesn't seem like MIST is funded as such. Rather, it is more like a glorified Private University for Military personnel and their children.
Either way, I'd like to see a citation for MIST being a public university. --Ragib 08:22, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
I also doubt this. Its website says, civil students can attend their university (not only Military personnel and their children). Search result does not show its real situation yet.The person who wrote the article, might have got the idea from the university. I'm also interested to see a citation for MIST being a private university (Since the article represents itself as a public university). --NAHID 08:44, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
When I visited MIST in 2001 for admission purpose, reception desk informed me that it is an institute and its degree is awarded by the University of Dhaka. Later on I understood what they tried to mean; example can be shown from the University of London system where colleges from the recognized body such as King's College London, University College London etc act as autonomous universities (with royal charter also!) but could not award degree to their students. Only UoL has the right to award degree. Trinity College Dublin and University of Dublin has also such a complicated relation. But to be very honest, I'm not sure that the case of MIST is similar to these two examples.
It is really difficult to categorize MIST as a private university just based on high rate of student fees and faculty salary. Same way, we can not claim it a public university because of its University of Dhaka (or whatever else) degree. Private universities are categorized by their establishment, i.e. established under the private university act 1992. Public universities are also established by their respective acts. Is there any such act for MIST?
Moreover, if Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) is categorized as a university, then why not Institute of Information Technology[1], an institute of University of Dhaka and Institute for Information & Communication Technology[2], an institute of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology? Unfortunately University Grants Commission[3], organization that can help us most, can not provide any information regarding this issue. I think a detail debate on MIST's status at its discussion page may bring a proper solution. Nahid, would you please take the initiative to arrange a platform to have discussion on this issue? Niaz bd 08:45, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
It appears that what MIST personnel meant was MIST is affiliated as a college under DU. Similarly, BMA is affiliated under Chittagong University, and Borhanuddin College is affiliated under National University.
I think the best source here would be UGC, which has list of private universities, opened under the Pvt University Act of 1992. Let's not speculate, but rather find a citation from UGC that MIST is public, otherwise list it as pvt. From what I heard about the fee structure of MIST, it certainly isn't public. --Ragib 09:00, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
Recently UGC updated their website and removed the list containing private university names :-( . Niaz bd 09:14, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
  • UGC enlisted only 4 public and 21 private universities here. As I mentioned MIST article above, which of course, written from a source. So it wouldn't be a good idea to add it as a private university unless a citation found.--NAHID 06:33, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
I do agree. But, we should have a discussion and finally need to come up with a solution on following issues...
  • What will be our criteria to identify a university as a private/public university?
  • Is it (MIST) a university on its own right?
  • Is it a public (or private) university?
Regards -- Niaz bd 07:01, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
Agreed. I think we should stick to WP:V, and only include MIST to either of these templates when we get a reference from a reliable/official source such as UGC. Niaz's 1st question is easy to answer: UGC has lists of all public and pvt univs, so any university opened under the private univ act of 1992 is a pvt univ. For public universities, there are different acts of the parliament/circulars of UGC/Edu ministry that establishes them, so their status is official. For the 2nd question, I'm not sure of MIST ... whether it is a fully recognized university needs to be verified. --Ragib 08:39, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
MIST's own website doesn't call it a university. Rather it is identified as a technical institute. Aditya(talkcontribs) 11:58, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
MIST maintains such a complicated affiliation and recognition that it is quite enough to make some one mad! Let me quote from their official website: All academic programs of MIST are affiliated with the University of Dhaka (DU). All examinations are conducted as per the schedule approved by the same university. DU also approves the results and awards the certificates amongst the students. However, MIST follows the syllabus of BUET for the Engineering programs and that of Institute of Business Administration (IBA), DU for MBA program. Anyway, I prefer a separate section for all the institutes under recognized universities such as DU and BUET. Niaz bd 17:46, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] PSTU

I have changed the name Patuakhali Science and Technology University from Patuakhali University of Science and Technology. As this is the name according to UGC. And I've created the article with this name.As PSTU has no website, the name and the article should be checked. So, Help.Thank you. Tanvir che (talk) 16:30, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

  • We should stick with UGC unless the official website of PSTU reveals its exact name.--NAHID 20:30, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] HMDSTU

I've changed the name to Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University according to the official website and created the article.Tanvir che (talk) 18:44, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Happy editing :)--NAHID 20:30, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Impressive effort. Keep continuing. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 11:20, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
