Pseudohemiodon is a genus of catfishes (order Siluriformes) of the family Loricariidae. It includes seven species, P. amazonus, P. apithanos, P. devincenzii, P. laminus, P. laticeps, P. platycephalus and P. thorectes.^[1]

Pseudohemiodon is distributed in the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná River basins.^[2] P. amazonus occurs in the lower Amazon River basin in Brazil. P. apithanos originates from the San Miquel River basin of the western Amazon River drainage in Ecuador. P. devincenzii is distributed in the Uruguay River basin in Uruguay. P. laminus inhabits the upper Amazon River basin of Peru. P. platycephalus is known from the Paraguay River basin, Brazil. P. laticeps is from the Uruguay, Paraná, and Paraguay River basins. P. thorectes lives in the Mamoré River basin of Bolivia.^[1]

The body of Pseudohemiodon species is very flat and the pelvic fins are used mainly for locomotion on sand. Sexual dimorphism is unknown.^[2] P. amazonus grows to 9.2 centimetres (3.6 in) SL.^[3] P. apithanos grows to 14.5 cm (5.7 in) SL.^[4] P. devincenzii grows to 14.3 cm (5.6 in) SL.^[5] P. laminus grows to 15.9 cm (6.3 in) SL.^[6] P. laticeps grows to 29.8 cm (11.7 in) SL.^[7] P. platycephalus grows to 18.0 cm (7.1 in) SL.^[8] P. thorectes grows to 11.7 cm (4.6 in) SL.^[9]

[edit] Ecology

like other members of the Pseudohemiodon group, Pseudohemiodon occurs primarily over sandy substrates.^[2] Also like the other genera in the Pseudohemiodon group, species of this genus are abdomino-lip brooders. The very large eggs are incubated by the male.^[2]
