In 2005, Progam the Dead signed briefly with Universal Records, releasing their self-titled debut on October 25th of that year. The label gave the record a "soft release" , while focusing on labelmates and fellow newcomers Hinder and 10 Years. The band left the label shortly after the release and began working on their next independent album.

[edit] Program The Dead- Ginger

The band was touring throughout the US and the UK through most of 2006, and began writing a number of songs, some of which would end up on Program the Dead's second album, Ginger. The band's original bassist Johnny McClay left the group, and they enlisted the assistance of friend William DuVall to fill in on bass and help produce their new album. Ginger features a cover of Hello, I Love You by The Doors. The album was recorded by Jeff Bakos at Bakos Studio in Atlanta, GA. The album was released independently, made available for free stream on Altsounds and sold digitally through iTunes and eMusic.

A documentary about the making of Ginger entitled "ATLANTA SESSIONS" is said to be in progress with producer/director Steve Reissner (Comes With The Fall, Tech N9ne , Chingy), however no details have been released. An excerpt from the documentary was added to YouTube and was selected as the Editor's Pick on January 24, 2007, and received over 75,000 plays in the span of one weekend. During these Atlanta Sessions, Tom Kafafian joined the band on bass as a permanent replacement.

Program the Dead was then embraced by industry publication Kings of A&R who prominently featured the band in their "Higher Learning" section on January 30, 2007. The website made the songs Let Me Inside and Pretty Mess available for free download. Program the Dead remained on the front page of their website for 6 weeks.
