The Prix du Jockey Club, sometimes referred to as the French Derby, is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run over a distance of 2,100 metres (approximately 1 mile 2½ furlongs) at Chantilly Racecourse and takes place annually, presently in early June.
First run on April 24, 1836, the race was inspired by the English Derby and named in homage to the Jockey Club based at Newmarket in England. Initially it was run over 2,500 metres, which was cut to 2,400 metres in 1843. With the exception of some wartime races it continued at this distance until the present length was set in 2005. It was originally restricted to horses born and bred in France, before opening to foreign participants in 1946.
The race first took place away from Chantilly in the year of the 1848 French Revolution, when it was switched at short notice to Versailles. It was not run in 1871 due to the Franco-Prussian War, nor in 1915, but through the remainder of World War I there was a substitute race titled the Prix des Trois Ans. This was held at Moulins in 1916, Chantilly in 1917 and Maisons-Laffitte in 1918. The Prix du Jockey Club resumed the following year with the first of two post-war runnings at Longchamp.
During World War II there were further disruptions. In 1940 a replacement race over 2,600 metres took place at Auteuil with the title Prix de Chantilly. For the following two years the Prix du Jockey Club was contested at Longchamp, with a record number of 28 runners in 1942. It was run over 2,300 metres at Tremblay in 1943 and 1944, then returned to Longchamp for three more years before arriving back at Chantilly in 1948.
The Prix du Jockey Club and the English Derby are usually run in close succession and it is rare for any horse to compete in both events. No horse has won both races, although the 1878 winner of the French version, Insulaire, went on to finish runner-up in the English Derby three days later. The winner of the Prix du Jockey Club in 1999, Montjeu, is the most recent of four horses to also win the Irish Derby. Nine winners have subsequently won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (first run in 1920), most recently Dalakhani in 2003.
The first foreign trained horse to win the Prix du Jockey Club was Assert in 1982, trained in Ireland by David O'Brien. The first such contender to finish in the frame was the 1975 runner-up Patch, trained in England by Peter Walwyn.
Nine fillies have won the race, but none since La Moriniere in 1900. The most recent filly to finish in second place was Bella Paola in 1958 and the last to contest the Prix du Jockey Club was Natagora, third in 2008.
