Powelliphanta hochstetteri hochstetteri, known as one of the amber snails, is a subspecies of large, carnivorous land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Rhytididae.

This subspecies is endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. It is found on the Pikikiruna Range between Motueka and Takaka, and the Tasman Mountains, at the north of the South Island.

[edit] Shell description

The dorsal surface is sculptured with minute wavy spiral striae, abruptly terminated at the periphery. The base and the parietal callus are smooth. Variably spirally lined, banded, or zoned with dark-brown or reddish, upon a light yellowish-brown ground. Invariably the umbilicus is free from ornamentation.

The shell diameter is up to 74 mm, and height up to 35 mm.
