Pottersville
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pottersville is the creation of the guardian angel Clarence Odbody and other angels in Heaven to show George Bailey what the world would have been like had George never been born, in the 1946 Frank Capra film It's a Wonderful Life. It is a hypothetical (although very real) transposition of Bedford Falls shown to George after the man wishes he had never existed.
In this alternate reality where George Bailey has never been born, ruthless town businessman Henry F. Potter would have taken control of the entire town of Bedford Falls and transformed it into a trashy strip of jitterbug dance halls and whiskey joints, all designed to give utmost power to Potter and more money in his vaults.
Pottersville, and how it has transformed all of the people George knew (when he existed) into unhappy, corrupt and/or amoral people, is so powerful that George wishes for the old Bedford Falls (where he was destined to go to prison for misplacing his business's funds) to be back and for him to live again.
Some viewers, however, have noted that they prefer Pottersville to its duller counterpart, as summarized in a famous 2001 essay in Salon.com by Gary Kamiya called "All hail Pottersville!".
