Portswood is a district of Southampton, England, near Highfield. It is to the north-east of the city centre; bounded by (clockwise from west) Freemantle, Highfield, Swaythling, St. Denys and Bevois Valley.
Portswood is a largely residential area close to the main campus of the University of Southampton. As such, it includes much student accommodation in multiple-occupancy converted housing. The main thoroughfare, Portswood Road, is a popular student area with many bars and pubs, as well as takeaways, including well known brands such and as Pizza Hut, KFC, and Subway. It also has a large number of charity shops, selling mainly second-hand clothes, toys, books, music and films, and a computer shop. Portswood Library, opened as a Carnegie library in 1915, has recently been upgraded with new IT facilities for the general public, funded from a National Lottery grant. There are a range of shops in Portswood from supermarkets to small local businesses. Portswood also has its own primary school. The nearest secondary schools are Cantell Secondary School which is located on Glen Eyre Road and Bitterne Park School.
Portswood (and Bevois Valley) are increasingly seen as home to Southampton's burgeoning music scene, with many Portswood venues now offering regular live music and opportunities for local musicians as well as nationally and internationally acclaimed acts. There are a number of pubs in the area covering different tastes from sports bars, student friendly pubs and real ale pubs. There is also a website with local news and views.
The nearest railway station is St Denys. There are also regular bus services to the city centre and other parts of Southampton.
The main student club in Portswood is Clowns and Jesters Nightclub, located on the Bevois Valley Hill. A popular club for alternatives is The Dungeon which is downhill from Clowns and Jesters Nightclub.
