Port de Pollença (in Spanish, Puerto Pollensa) is a small resort town in north-eastern Mallorca, Spain, situated on the Bay of Pollença. It is popular with tourists with its beach, hotels and bars. It lies about six kilometres east of the inland town Pollença and two kilometres southeast of Cala Sant Vicenç.

In 2001 it was voted the favourite holiday destination in the world by the readers of the UK's Sunday Times.

[edit] Geography

Port de Pollença is the most northerly resort in Mallorca is now less than one hour's travel by car or bus from the island's capital city Palma, via the roads PM-27, C-713 & PM-220. The resort is split into several main areas: Pinewalk, Boquer, Central, Siller, Pinaret, Llenaire and Gomar.

[edit] Pinewalk

The Pine Walk is perhaps the most famous part of the resort, fronting onto a sheltered part of the larger Badia de Pollença. This is where many of the privately owned apartments and houses can be found and is known for its tranquil environment. Quite a few of these properties are available for holiday rentals. Immediately behind The Pine Walk there are three urbanisations that are being slowly developed, these being Urban Boquer, Bellresguard and Ca'n Singala.

[edit] Central

The heart of the resort is where most of the larger hotels are situated. The nightlife in the resort is very much based around the family, with an excellent selection of restaurants and bars, but little in the way of nightlife after midnight. The marina is full of bustle through the day with, with moorings for most sizes of yacht, a selection of pleasure cruise boats, repair yards and people to watch. The smart Yacht Club proves very popular with the marine community.

The main square in the resort Plaça Capllonch is bounded on three sides by restaurants, shops and bars, with apartments above and a large church to the western side, but is surprisingly relaxing throughout the day except for the Wednesday market, when the whole square is alive with traders selling fruit, fish, clothing and craftwork. Behind the central area is another relatively new urbanisation, Urban Siller.

[edit] Southern

To the south there is a large older urbanisation, consisting of three areas, Urban El Pineret, Urban Gommar and Urban Llenaire. This area is mainly apartments, smaller hotels and private homes and has slowly developed over the years. The beach in this area is family friendly, with a gentle grade into the sea, watersports and a wide promenade suitable for walking and cycling along. There are a few small shops and bars along the beach.

[edit] Highways

A major new bypass has been constructed to the rear of the resort, this currently links the main road into the resort PM-220 Carretera Pollença north to the PM-221 that follows a scenic route along the Formentor headland. Sections of the southern bypass have been constructed and there is visible evidence of a protected corridor that will eventually link with the Paseo de Alemania at the southern end of the main beach area.

[edit] Super Scooper

A number of amphibious firefighting aircraft, typically Canadair CL-215, are based on the edge of the resort and can often be seen on exercise around the bay. New visitors to the resort can often be spotted by the amazed looks as they watch a bright yellow and red aircraft bounce into the water of the bay.
