Polyetherimide (PEI) is an amorphous, amber-to-transparent thermoplastic with similar characteristics to PEEK's. Relative to PEEK, it is cheaper, but less temperature-resistant, and lower in impact strength. It is prone to stress cracking in chlorinated solvents. It is available under the tradename Ultem, a registered trademark of SABIC Innovative Plastics, the principal developer and manufacturer.
[edit] Structure
The molecular formula of PEI's repeat unit is C37H24O6N2
[edit] Properties
The glass transition temperature of PEI is 216 °C. Its amorphous density at 25 °C is 1.27 g/cc. It is prone to stress cracking in chlorinated solvents. Its molecular weight of repeat unit: 592 g/mol.
