From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pollok is a large district on the south-western side of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It was built to house families from the over crowded inner city. Built from the 1920's to 1950's housing 30,000.
The main features of the area are the nearby park, Pollok Country Park and the adjacent Crookston Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was once held.
Pollok has two Secondary schools, Rosshall Academy in the north and St Paul's High School which recently gained national coverage for its rise up the league tables. This was attributed to the highly controversial streaming of pupils, introduced by Headteacher Rod O'Donnell. St Pauls High School is recognised as one of the schools of ambition in Scotland.
Pollok had the largest Tesco in Scotland at the side of the old Pollok Centre and the newly opened Silverburn Centre however the largest Tesco in Scotland is now the Port Glasgow store, which opened in July 2007 with a floorspace of (110,000 sq ft) Recently, progressively larger stores have been opened - and as a result many people claim that their town has the UK's largest Tesco.
When completed, as well as bringing many hundreds of jobs, Pollok will be able to boast the Silverburn Centre as the largest of its kind in Scotland.
Major department stores such as M&S and Debenhams have signed up to be part of the new shopping centre, to replace the old Pollok Centre. A new 24 hour Tesco Extra opened on the site in July 2006 and will link up with the centre. The development has already started, it will include 95 stores and 13 restaurants/cafes, whatever they might be, for completion this October, it will compete with Braehead at Renfrew for custom.
