The Placebox is an Infobox, a set of templates. It is intended to display common information about a (populated) place, especially (but not limited to) municipalities (cities, towns and villages). These composite templates were inspired by the Taxobox employed in the Tree of Life WikiProject.

Some of the templates of the Placebox must be placed in a given order; the others are optional and movable. If you want to create more (customized) templates, please discuss them with the other users first.

Don't create meta-templates. That is, don't create templates that reference or build on another templates. Calling a template from inside the definition of another template is resource-intensive and slows down the Wikimedia servers.

1. Start the box with {{placebox-begin}}.
2. You can (and probably will) include a header here. The header can be anything that fits into an HTML table cell, including a whole sub-table. In the example below, the header is itself a template, {{city-header-ar}} (it is intended for cities in Argentina, and its parameter is the name of the city). There is a generic, simple header template, {{placebox-header}}, for you to get the idea.
3. After the header comes the data. Start this section with {{placebox-begin-data}}.
4. The Placebox has some standard templates that you can include inside the data section. You can also make your own. The data section creates a table with two columns, and the following templates respect that format.
5. Last in the data section should be a map. {{placebox-map}} is called with one parameter, the name of the image. You must not use the [[Image:...]] wikisyntax. The template inserts everything for you, including alignment and a proper size.
6. End the data section with {{placebox-end-data}}.
7. You can create a new section after this, if you want to.
8. Wrap up the Placebox with {{placebox-end}}.
