[edit] Template

I have created {{placeopedia}} for adding links to Placeopedia into articles. HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 15:02, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Downloading the database?

The article says

The site also provides syndicated data under a Creative Commons license.

Which Creative Commons license is used? Is it possible to download the whole database? AxelBoldt 19:09, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

You can now download the entire database, yes. I don't know about the particular licence, I'll try and find out. Dracos 17:21, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright and promotional issues

As I understand it, Placeopedia uses Wikipedia data - perfectly legally, under the GFDL - but is otherwise unconnected with Wikipedia. This throws up a couple of issues:

  • Placeopedia uses a version of the Wikipedia logo, which as I understand it is not GFDLed but is copyright to the Wikimedia foundation.
  • There are many, many sites which use WP data. Why are we particularly promoting this one, with the use of {{placeopedia}} and [[Category:Places on Placeopedia]]?

I'm guessing this article is probably watched by someone from mySociety or Placeopedia so I'm flagging these issues here first for discussion. --OpenToppedBus - Talk to the driver 16:25, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

The Wikimedia foundation are aware of our use of the Wikipedia logo. Dracos 17:21, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

That's nice, but unless you can show that you have a trademark license agreement with the Wikimedia Foundation, you're not allowed to associate yourself with their logo and mustn't use it on your site. See commons:Image:Wikipedia-logo.png for its license. Femto 11:51, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

I see that User:JonathanWinarske has placed links to Placeopedia in many geographical articles. Putting one of the {{coor}} templates allows similar functionality for the user, and allows them to use their choice of mapping software. If there has been discussion of why Placeopedia should get preferential treatment, please show me where this discussion has occurred, otherwise I will roll back these edits as spam.-gadfium 18:54, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Since no one has replied, I have rolled back the edits.-gadfium 20:49, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Template:Placeopedia is up for TfD. Femto 12:05, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What happened?

http://www.placeopedia.com doesn't exist anymore! Has the site been taken down, or are they just having a server problem at the time of writing? --Siva 00:40, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Doesn't work for me either. Let's give it a couple of days and then we can update the article. AxelBoldt 17:44, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

It works now. They must have had a server problem.--Siva 00:44, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Placeopedia.jpg

Image:Placeopedia.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 08:49, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
