Egoli: Place of Gold is a long-running bilingual (English and Afrikaans) South African soap opera. Broadcast from Monday to Friday on M-Net at 18:00, the first episode of what was South African television's first daily soap opera premiered on 6 April 1992. By 3 December 1999, Egoli had become the first South African television program in any genre to reach 2000 episodes. As of 3 August 2007, 4000 episodes have aired.
As the name of the series implies, it is set in Johannesburg, which is sometimes referred to as eGoli. The series was created (and is still headed by) Franz Marx, who has admitted that "Egoli is aimed at women of all nationalities between the ages of twenty-five and forty-five, with middle or upper incomes".[citation needed]
The series has a large following, and "Egoli Spectaculars" are held countrywide each year for fans of the series to meet the cast.
