Petey (ISBN 0786804262) is a children's book by Ben Mikaelsen, published in 1998] and set in the 1920s and 1990s.^[1] This story helps to expand children's understanding of people with disabilities and it helps children to discover what these people go through. Petey is a book about growth, understanding, wisdom and love that shows that beauty can be found inside the simplest things.

The story of the life of Petey is based on the true story^{[citation needed]} of a child born with severe cerebral palsy who was misdiagnosed as mentally retarded. His parents commit him to a state asylum in the 1920s. In this part, Petey makes many new friends but feels sad afterwards when they are taken away from him. At an early age, Petey makes friends with Calvin. The last person to take care of Petey before he is moved to a nursing home and he and Calvin are separated, is Owen.

Set in the 1990s, a troubled eighth-grader, Trevor, meets the now 70-year-old Petey at a nursing home and asks him to be his grandfather. At first, Trevor didn't like Petey because of his disabillities. After three bullies targeted Petey with snowballs, Trevor tried to protect him, and eventually befriended Petey. Trevor helps fund a donation drive to get Petey a new wheelchair, and finds Calvin and Owen and reunites them with Petey.
