Petar Stoychev (Bulgarian: Петър Стойчев) (born 24 October 1976 in Momchilgrad) is a Bulgarian open water swimmer and is most famous for claiming third place at 2005 FINA World Championships in Montréal, Canada during the 10k and 25k metre events, respectively. Stoychev has swam at many locations around the world and was the overall winner of the Open Water World Championship seven times. On August 25, 2007 he became the fastest person to swim across the English Channel in a time of 6 h and 57 mins[1], beating the previous record set by Christof Wandratsch in 2005 of 7 h and 03 mins.
In his native Bulgaria he featured in adverts for the national lottery with the phrase, "If you don't play, you don't win" and is a national celebrity.
