The Petal School District is a public school district based in Petal, Mississippi (USA).

  • W.L. Smith Elementary School (Grades 3-5)
  • Petal Elementary School (Grades K-2)

Note: Upon the completion of the new Petal Primary School (scheduled to open for the 2008-2009 school year), the following changes will be made to the school structure:

  • Petal High School - no changes (9-12).
  • Petal Middle School - 6th grade will move to W.L. Smith, school will become 7th & 8th grades only.
  • W.L. Smith (upper elementary) - 5th & 6th grades.
  • Petal Elementary School - 3rd & 4th grades will move here from Smith.
  • Petal Primary School (new) - Kindergarten through 2nd grade.

The district will be enforcing a mandatory dress code.[1]

There were a total of 3,872 students enrolled in the Petal School District during the 2006-2007 school year. The gender makeup of the district was 48% female and 52% male. The racial makeup of the district was 12.89% African American, 84.89% White, 1.55% Hispanic, 0.59% Asian, and 0.08% Native American.[2] 35.7% of the district's students were eligible to receive free lunch.[3]

  • In October 5, 2007 the Petal High School was awarded the Blue Ribbon (No Child Left Behind program) by the State of Mississippi for it's excellence in education
  • As of the 2007-2008 school years, the Petal Athletics Department is now at 5A level
  • The Petal High School Band ranks All Superior in State for the drumline and general organization, and were recently named the 5A State Champions
  • 4A State High School Baseball Champions- 1990, 1991, 1995, 1999
  • 2005 Sports Illustrated town
