Pennsylvania Route 60 (PA Route 60 or PA 60), also called State Route 60 (SR 60) or PA Turnpike 60 on the route's tolled section (though signed as Toll 60), is a major 74 mile long state highway in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, connecting Pittsburgh to the areas of the northwest and west of Pittsburgh. The route's southern terminus is on Pittsburgh's West End at U.S. Route 19/Pennsylvania Route 51 while the northern terminus is at U.S. Route 62 Business in Sharon just north of the interchange with Interstate 80. From U.S. Route 22/U.S. Route 30 in Robinson Township to Pennsylvania Route 18 in Hermitage, PA 60 is a freeway.
PA 60 parallels Pennsylvania Route 18 for the bulk of its route. In fact, the two routes intersect each other three times in Monaca, West Middlesex, and Hermitage. Many of PA 60's exits are also within a mile from PA 18.
The toll section of PA 60 is maintained by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, which accepts E-ZPass, as does the rest of the PTC-maintained highways. All other portions of PA 60 are maintained by PennDOT.
The U.S. Congress has legislated an extension of Interstate 376 along most of PA 60, running from US 22/US 30 to I-80. When the extension becomes official, PA 60 is expected to be truncated to its current intersection with U.S. 22 & U.S. 30 on Pittsburgh's Parkway West in Robinson Township, while the "Toll 60" and "Business 60" designations (the latter of which is from a former alignment of PA 60 in Moon Township, see below), are expected to be decommissioned altogether.

[edit] At-grade section (Pittsburgh section)
One of only two at-grade (local) sections of PA 60 is located in Allegheny County. The southern terminus is located in this section of PA 60. PA 60 has many names in this section like Steubenville Pike and Noblestown Road.
PA 60 begins at an at-grade intersection with U.S. Route 19, Pennsylvania Route 51, and the northern terminus of Pennsylvania Route 837 on Pittsburgh's West End. In Crafton, PA 60 meets the eastern terminus of Pennsylvania Route 50. In Crafton, northbound and southbound traffic of PA 60 divides for about a half a mile. About 2 or 3 miles west of Crafton, PA 60 intersects Interstate 79 at Exit 60. At this point, the Yellow Belt has become PA 60. The at-grade section ends when PA 60 meets US 22/ US 30 and the PA 60 freeway begins.
[edit] Airport Parkway to Beaver Valley Expressway
This section of PA 60 marks the beginning of a long limited access (freeway) highway. The freeway begins at exit 1; exit 1 is an interchange with the Parkway West or US 22/30, south of Pittsburgh International Airport. At exit 3 marks the southern terminus of Pennsylvania Route 60 Business which is also a part freeway and a bypass for the airport. Exit 6 is a major interchange of PA 60; exit 6 is the main entrance to Pittsburgh International Airport. Exit 6 is also the western terminus of Pennsylvania Route 576 (Southern Beltway). PA 576 is a newly built highway and is a toll road. At exit 8 and in Moon marks the northern terminus of PA 60 Business. At exit 12 is where Pennsylvania Route 18 will start to parallel PA 60 and PA 18 will meet PA 60 two more times. Exit 14 is the final exit before PA 60 becomes Turnpike 60 officially James E. Ross Highway.
[edit] Turnpike 60 (James E. Ross Highway)
Exit 29 (Pennsylvania Route 51) is the final exit before Turnpike 60 passes through toll barriers. Beyond this point, all passengers must pay a toll to utilize the highway. Recently, the Pennsylvania Turnpike has retrofitted toll plazas along PA Turnpike 60 to accept E-ZPass. All exits on Turnpike 60 have a pay limit or passengers can use E-ZPass. Vehicles with 2 axles have to pay $0.50 and 3 or more axles $2.00. The second of two toll barriers appear 2 miles southwest of New Castle. The final exit before Turnpike 60 returns to PA 60 is exit 43.
[edit] New Castle to Sharon
At the northern terminus of Turnpike 60, U.S. Route 422 begins a concurrency with PA 60 around New Castle for about a mile at exit 45. PA 60 meets the eastern terminus of U.S. Route 224 west of New Castle. On exit E marks the northern terminus of the concurrency with U.S. Route 422. Southeast of Sharon, PA 60 intersects Interstate 80 at the final full interchange of the long Beaver Valley Expressway. The final interchange of the Beaver Valley Expressway is an interchange with Pennsylvania Route 18. The second section where PA 60 is at-grade is located within the city of Sharon. It terminates at an interchange with U.S. Route 62 Business in downtown Sharon.
