Governance Penge Urban District Council

Penge was a local government district in north west Kent from 1900 to 1965.[1] It was formed of the civil parish of Penge which included the settlements of Penge, Anerley and part of Crystal Palace. It was part of the London postal district and Metropolitan Police District.

It was created an urban district in 1900 by the London Government Act 1899; which had made provision for the area to either become part of the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell or the Metropolitan Borough of Lewisham in the County of London, or to form an urban district in Kent or Surrey.

The historic county boundary between Kent and Surrey cut right through the area[2] and it had previously formed a detached part of the parish of Battersea which was transferred from Surrey to the County of London in 1889.[3]

In 1965 the urban district was abolished by the London Government Act 1963 and its former area was transferred to Greater London from Kent, to be was combined with that of other districts to form the present-day London Borough of Bromley.[1]
