Talk:Pekin, Illinois
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dan Fogelberg was born and raised in Peoria and attended schools there. His only link to Pekin (a suburb of Peoria) is that his father taught music at Pekin High School.
Pekin is not a suburb of Peoria. The two aren't even in the same county.
Pekin is part of the Peoria-Pekin MSA area which includes five counties. It is part of a conurbation with the central urban core being the City of Peoria. A suburb does not need to be in the same county. Most of Peoria's suburbs are in Tazewell County, with the remaining in Peoria and Woodford counties. For example, a majority of the suburbs of Chicago are located in five other counties - Will, Lake, DuPage, McHenry, and Kane. Some of its suburbs are even located in other states such as Indiana. Joliet, once its own metro area, is now a suburb of Chicago due to extended urban growth. Also, a town can be in the same county and not be a suburb by definition such as Brimfield in Peoria County which is rural and not in a continous urban spread. Peoria's suburbs in Tazewell county range from Washington and Morton, through East Peoria to Pekin - consisting of a continous population strip from the urban center of Peoria.
why was michael layne removed?
Dan Fogelberg's father taught music at Woodruff High School (Peoria) - my mother was one of his students.
I grew up in Pekin. I notice there is not one word about Richard Griener, the little boy who disappeared in Pekin, one of the earliest child abductions to make national news.
As well, only passing mention is made of the 'Pekin Chinks' atheletic teams. It was far more than a nickname, it was the official team name for all the teams - baseball, football, and basketball. Their mascot was a cartoonish 'chinaman' with exaggerated features - slanted eyes, sampan hat, pigtails, clogs, a fu manchu robe, and hands in the opposing sleeves like a Peter Sellers caricature. The name was only changed, as I understand it, in 1981, long after I left Pekin. Pekin and 'Peking' were sister cities, the Chinese used to send over a girls slow-pitch softball team to play exhibition games against Pekin teams. How they managed to avoid taking offense to the team being called "The Chinks," I'll never know. Looking back on it, I cringe.
I'm surprised it was given only a few words.

Is the below really necessary?
Alum of the community high school include infamous cohorts Bryan Steger and Taylor Rafool. Following four years of wreaking terror on teachers and parents and breaking young girls hearts, the terrible twosome ventured to the University of Illinois. Young "Master P" Steger currently majors in pimpology and steals girls' viriginity with savage disregard, while Taylor "Raficky" hopes to become a scumbag of Tucker Max-like proportions and eventually fornicate every specie of mammal known to mankind.
Joining Bryan and Taylor in their adventurous journey's at the University of Illinois, Pekin Community High School alum Michael Hogue, followed the two Pekin legends to the same prestigious University. However, instead of studying "pimpology" or becoming "a scumbag of Tucker Max-like proportions," Michael spends an overwhelming amount of time on decreasing the size of his member so that when he is helicoptering, it doesn't hit him in the face. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Noobeditor (talk • contribs) 00:55, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Nothing about racism?
I'm surprised that there's nothing about how racist Pekin is. Pekin was, is, and always will be a Sundown Town. Membership in the KKK is common, and Klan members owned the local newspaper until the late 1990s. The police have and still do write DWB tickets. Pekin is on watch lists for being one of the most liberal-unfriendly cities in the United States. They also own most of the region's meth labs. Their high-school teams were named after a racial slur until the early 80s, and there is STILL protest to change the name BACK to the racial slur. Something like 30% of all crime in Pekin is racially motivated crime against minorities. I'm honestly scared to go there. Just drive through the place and you'll see. (But I don't advise it unless you're white!) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.136.119.89 (talk) 10:30, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
- Indeed. I lived in Pekin for quite a while and people had enough issue with me on being a non-Christian that I was forced to move, and I'm white. If I want to visit my non-white friends, I go to their houses because they refuse to come through Pekin to see me- my home is past Pekin, but requires driving through it. - I also must mention that while I was obtaining high school there, we DID end up getting out of school for three days because a meth lab exploded in the neighborhood right next to it and they had to detox the whole area. Also, there's a drive through liquor\smoke store RIGHT NEXT to the high school, a 5 minute walk. My best friend in high school refused to admit she was Jewish as she was scared of what would happen to her. ZaininOmega (talk) 22:16, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
the smoke shop you are referring to, does not sell alcohol. don't lie..... —Preceding unsigned comment added by EDDIEVRULZ (talk • contribs) 07:23, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

"Something like 30% of all crime in Pekin is racially motivated crime against minorities." you, my friend, are an idiot.... please show proof, or get lost. "Pekin is on watch lists for being one of the most liberal-unfriendly cities in the United States." again.....show proof. what watch lists are you referring to??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by EDDIEVRULZ (talk • contribs) 07:35, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
