[edit] Question

This text copied from "Wikipedia talk:Spam#Question".

Hello. This question is for a Wikipedian who understands WP:SPAM.

I work part-time for a small gallery/publisher that publicises artists and (every once in a while) sells their work. I recently created an article about one of these artists, an eminent contemporary South African artist and professor named Paul Stopforth. The gallery website has images from the artist's 2004 exhibition, photographs of the works themselves, and text related to the art and its history. The text is no doubt useful to anyone studying Stopforth's work, as are the images of his work, most of which are not available elsewhere on the internet. The text is biased, of course, (the gallery is selling him, after all); however, as scholars of art and art history read both NPOV sources (encyclopedias) and a spectrum of POV sources (galleries, critics), the content on the website would be a useful component of a research project on the artist.

I'd like to add an external link to the gallery website at "Paul Stopforth" because I know that scholars of Stopforth would appreciate having the content. However, I'm conflicted, because I know that such a link would provide side benefits to the gallery and (very indirectly) myself: better Google ranking, more publicity, a semblance of authority, etc. Also, as things stand, the only links on the article are neutral or positive reviews of Stopforth's art and life. One final count against the link's inclusion is WP:EL#Links normally to be avoided #3, which suggests that I shouldn't post the link because I own/maintain the website.

In summary: can a link be added to an article when the external website is POV and has a partly commercial purpose, but also has a purposefully academic value and would uniquely improve the article?

Here is the link. Omphaloscope » talk 18:54, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Site is more or less OK to link (by the way, you have a typo on the "about the artist" page: "increased its reign of terror"); given that its your own, the appropriate thing to do would be to mention it on the talk page of the relevant article, then let someone else make the call on whether it is a valuable addition to the article.
By the way, given that you are obviously connected to the artist: any chance of getting a (possibly low-res) image of one of his works released unde GFDL so we can use it in the article? - Jmabel | Talk 07:44, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice, Jmabel. I fixed the typo, and I'll try and get some photos released under the GFDL, too. Omphaloscope » talk 16:07, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
