Paul Gurner Maholm [Mah-HALL-uhm] (born June 25, 1982 in Greenwood, Mississippi) is a lefthanded pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a three-year letterman while pitching at Mississippi State, before being selected by the Pirates in the first round (8th overall) of the 2003 Major League Baseball draft. Maholm is a graduate of Germantown High School in Germantown, Tennessee.
He made his major league debut, as a starter, on August 30, 2005 against the Milwaukee Brewers and pitched 8.0 shutout innings, earning his first career win. He finished the 2005 season, providing the Pirates with a 3-1 record in 6 games, with a 2.18 ERA.
Maholm is currently a member of the Pirates 5 man rotation. He pitched his first complete game shutout, while giving up only 3 hits in a 3-0 victory over the Houston Astros on April 24, 2007
He struck out actor/comedian Billy Crystal during a spring training game against the New York Yankees in 2008. Crystal did, however, manage to foul a ball off.
