Parallel Sailor Moon

Parallel Sailor Moon is a 19-page comic written and drawn by Naoko Takeuchi. It was first published in her Materials Collection artbook, which was first printed in January 1999. This short story was added at the end as an omake to celebrate the year of the rabbit. It was reprinted in 2004 as part of the Story Collection Volume 2.

The story takes place in an alternate reality from the rest of the Sailor Moon series, so it does not fit to the main storyline or canon. One of the main reasons it does not fit into the main storyline is because it is stated in the main series that Usagi Tsukino will only have one child (Chibiusa). However, the lead character created especially for this story is Usagi's second child, Kousagi Tsukino. The daughters of the other four Guardian Senshi (all in grade 3 with Kousagi) also are in the story, who look exactly like (and are named after) their mothers (though the Japanese spelling of the names are different).

[edit] Story

Ami, Rei, Makoto and Minako all meet for the "Sailor Muscle Meeting" where they discuss what's been happening in their lives. Usagi shows up late for the meeting, and Chibiusa finds her to scold her for not paying the bills on time. Chibiusa also says that she stuck Kousagi with the rabbit care duties.

Ami, Rei, Mako and Mina (the adult characters' daughters) debate how they can ditch Kousagi and, after finding a viable solution, decide it is too expensive. They make her carry their shopping bags and run ahead to avoid her.

Kousagi trips and notices a pink cat with a crescent moon on its face. A great number of cats continue to gather while she collects herself. As a bright light approaches, Kousagi finds herself face to face with the cat, who now is a girl with a tail, whiskers and cat ears.

The cat-girl tells her that she is a princess, and Kousagi transforms into a Sailor Senshi by shouting "Parallel Moon Power, Make Up!" The cat-girl also says that her four peers are to protect and follow her as their mothers, the Guardian Senshi, do for Sailor Moon. They appear transformed. As the big ball of light approaches, it is revealed to be a giant rabbit head, made up of many smaller rabbits.

Kousagi immediately realizes that cats eat rabbits, as verified by a book the smaller Ami is holding, and tells the transformed mini-senshi to gather all of the cats. She shouts, "Kitty-cats, kitty-cats, a huge mountain of cats!"[1] and the giant cat-head eats the giant rabbit-head.

Kousagi and the others awaken in their cooking class, taught by Michiru, Haruka, and Setsuna. The girls state that they all had the same dream, but the pink cat, who is sitting by the window in cat form, says "It's not always a dream."

[edit] Characters

Most of the protagonists of the Sailor Moon series appear in the story. Many are married with children, and all are living their own alternate realties. In order of appearance, these characters and their parallel futures are:

  • Rei Hino now runs the shrine with her husband, who also teaches at a school. They run a calligraphy class together at the shrine.
  • Makoto Kino runs a shop (probably the shop that was supposed to be a bakery shop and florist shop put together as referenced by Volume 13) and is a homemaker. She has been married for 7 years, having lived with the man for 2 first.
  • Ami Mizuno is a doctor, but is poor. She's also married.
  • Minako Aino is the wife of an assistant director for a comedy. She gets to meet stars, see shows and get autographs. While in the main series she constantly makes puns by accident, here she seems to have full control of them.
  • Usagi Tsukino is a mother of two. She is married to Mamoru (from his brief cameo), but a horrid mother. She forgets to pay bills and cannot manage money that well (which is a requirement in Japan.[2][3])
  • Chibiusa Tsukino is in grade 9. She may not go to Jūban middle school, as she wears different school uniform, which has a moon emblem on it. While in the main series her full name is "Usagi Small Lady Serenity," her name is shown here as simply Chibiusa Tsukino (her mother's surname). She also wears glasses and retains her shortish, puffy hair, unlike the manga and anime, in which she is shown with longer, straighter hair at this age. She scolds Usagi for being a bad mother and tends to tease her younger sister, always sticking her with the tending of the rabbits that the Tsukino household keeps.
  • Hotaru Tomoe is also in grade 9, though she is ahead of Chibiusa in school in the main series. She also seems to wear glasses. Both Hotaru and Chibiusa are portrayed as very studious.
  • Setsuna Meioh, Haruka Tenoh, and Michiru Kaioh appear together at the end, and apparently run a cooking class.
  • Mamoru Chiba makes a brief cameo as Kousagi's father, but does not say anything, and his eyes are also blacked out. Chibiusa carries a Tuxedo Mask keychain, indicating that Mamoru still takes that form in this universe.

New characters created especially for the story are:

  • Ami Mizuno (水野あみ) - Daughter of the Mizuno Household. She's not very good at handwriting since she uses the computer so much, and seems to be frugal with money.
  • Rei Hino (火野れい) - Daughter of the Hino Household. Cynical, and does not like Kousagi.
  • Mako Kino (木野マコ) - Daughter of the Kino Household. Likes shopping. Also dislikes Kousagi.
  • Mina Aino (愛野ミナ) - Daughter of the Aino Household. She tends to make intentional puns, like her mother. Also dislikes Kousagi.
  • Kousagi Tsukino (月野こうさぎ) - Kousagi is Usagi Tsukino's second daughter. She has many of Usagi's traits, such as a bottomless stomach and klutziness (she trips while carrying an ice cream cone, for instance). When she thinks she has died, she expresses concern over not having eaten a variety of foods. Unlike Usagi with her friends, she is not well liked by the other girls. She is very energetic, upbeat and extremely naive. She is not very aware of when others do not like her or are taking advantage of her. She always throws scissors in rock-paper-scissors (looks like a rabbit). She also hates cats (Cats and rabbits are sometimes said to share the same Chinese Zodiac Year). She has lavender hair and blue eyes.
  • Kousagi's cat (unnamed) - This tiny cat is described as being the pink color of dentist's plaque examination candy. She's slightly calico. She transforms into a human girl, but retains the majority of her cat features including her whiskers and curly tail. She also gains heart-shaped odango, similar to the hairstyle of ChibiChibi.
