Template talk:Pacific Ten Conference Rivalry

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

[edit] Schools, football games, or trophies?

This is a nice template to add to the relevant articles. However, it is ambiguous, because there is not complete consistency on the articles. There are rivalries between the school pairs in the Pacific-10 Conference (example: UCLA-USC rivalry). There are rivalry football games between the schools (example: Big Game (football)). There are also the trophies awarded to the winners of the rivalry football games (examples: Stanford Axe Apple Cup)). And the Lexus Gauntlet serves as an overall rivalry trophy for two sets of schools. Group29 (talk) 16:32, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

The title line in the template is "Pacific Ten Football Rivalry Games" so that would mean it is the football games. Aboutmovies (talk) 16:48, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
If the title is not ambiguous, then the entries are. Here are some examples: The Big Game and Civil War exactly fit the template's title. They are Pacific Ten Football Rivalry Games. Apple Cup and Territorial Cup, are both about the the trophy and the game. So they fit, but not as well. Victory Bell is about the trophy, but only references the game. However the choice comes down to either Victory Bell or UCLA-USC rivalry which covers more than just the football game. If you want to complicate things further, there are other Pacific Ten Football Rivalry Games, most notably Notre Dame-USC. And while it is implied that it may not belong, by the grouping, it is not explicitly excluded by using the word "Conference" in the title.
Here is my suggestion. The template should contain the actual names of the games: UCLA-USC game, Big Game, Apple cup game, Civil War, Territorial cup game, with links to appropriate relevant articles such as they are at this point. The alternative is that the title could be "trophies" instead of "games" and list the trophies for each game:bell, cup, cup, axe, and platypus. Thanks, Group29 (talk) 17:32, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
