[edit] History

On 24 January 1910, three Sisters of Mercy came to "Roma", a private house in Cape Street. Two Sisters took charge of St. Monica's (now St. John's) Primary School and a secondary school was commenced with a nucleus of six pupils.

The convent of Mercy was built in 1911, and was blessed and opened on the feast of Our Lady of Mercy, 24 September 1911. A new wooden school house was built in 1911 and the school had an enrolment of 14 pupils.

The school was named Our Lady of Mercy College in 1927. Two brick classrooms which today are part of the administration block were built in 1928. By this time the enrolment had risen to around 70. The school buildings were further extended in the 1950s and, in 1959, the area opposite the college in Yarra Street was bought for sports and playing space. A gymnasium was built on this area and initially completed in early 1985. This original building was incorporated into the theatre/gymnasium complex in 1997–8.[2]
