South San Diego is a rural community within southeast San Diego, California, just north of the U.S.–Mexico border. It is bordered by the Otay River Valley and the city of Chula Vista on the north, Interstate 805 on the west, and county land on the east. State Route 905 connects Otay Mesa and the Interstate. Some of the earliest flights in U.S. history occurred in the vicinity of Otay Mesa through the experimentation of aviation pioneer John J. Montgomery.
The Otay Mesa Port of Entry is one of two border crossings within the city of San Diego, California, the other being the San Ysidro Port of Entry six miles to the west.
South of the border between the United States and Mexico, the same region continues within the municipality of Tijuana, Baja California, but is a residential and industrial area called "Mesa de Otay" and is 1 of 9 Delegaciones (delegations) of Baja California's Tijuana municipality.
