[edit] The Grand Merge discussion

I am proposing the each of the various articles about the orcas at the various SeaWorld parks be merged into a single article. The current set of articles are mostly unsourced, mostly poorly written, and inconsistent with each other. Furthermore, most of the orcas are not notable by themselves. Over the next few days, I'll be filling in this article with stuff from the other articles. Then, assuming a reasonable consensus, I'll turn the other referenced articles into redirects to sections of this one. -- ArglebargleIV 16:50, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Would it be a good idea to move/rename this article to "Orcas in captivity"? -- ArglebargleIV 16:54, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

I disagree with a merge. My reasons:

  1. The article would have to be renamed because whales are often moved (example:Ikaika (whale)) and then sometimes they die.
  2. Some whales have too much information and are justified in having their own article.
  3. A list called "Orcas at SeaWorld" simply takes the emphases away from learning about the whales and places it on the institution.
  4. I suggest this article be merged with SeaWorld.

What would be useful is to have a list of all whales that are/were in captivity with a short summary (location/lifespan/etc), and if enough information is available, a link to their own article. If this new article listed the whales in chronological order, it would be more useful and have more meaning. Just my opinion, hope to see a reply. Thanks, MetalBox

  • Hmm, I think you have really good points. I agree with them. A new article with a timeline, I like that. Maybe I'll start that later today or tomorrow. -- ArglebargleIV 14:14, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure what else is targeted to merge here, but Kyuquot cannot; its contents should be transferred to a new article named Kyuquot (whale) as Kyuquot itself MUST become a disambig page. Kyuquot people, Kyuquot, British Columbia, and Kyuquot Inlet for starters, and there may be others that use it, e.g. a local planning or government or health authority. I have a similar problem with Tillikum and Tilikum, which redirect to Tilikum (whale), as tillicum in various spellings turns up in other usages, notably as a major neighbourhood/area of Victoria, and also as I recall, at one time, a now-defunct Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television program. I imagine I'll find a few more of these....I should cruise the named-whale category, I guess. So I oppose any such merge with the articles currently structured/titled the way they are.Skookum1 19:23, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Family trees

Several of the individual articles have detailed family tree information. To avoid duplication, a single ancestry list should be composed for the article. I'm copying each of the tress I run into during this merge to here for now. -- ArglebargleIV 16:54, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] No Merge

It looks like no merge will be performed, see the first section. I'll get this page deleted in the next few days. Probably an "Orcas In Captivity" page is better, with links and a timeline. -- ArglebargleIV 21:18, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Corky/2/II

Not related to the merge itself, but there are some confusing anomolies between the various pages regarding Corky/Corky 2/Corky II which hopefully someone familiar with the Orcas could sort out. Azazelx 18:09, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Only living orcas or...?

Is this article intended only to list living orcas at the SeaWorld parks, or serve as a running history of all Orcas that have been/are in the parks?

Gak... on second thought, I see that the wikigods aren't keen on the individual pages for each captive orca, to begin with (ref: no page for Halyn -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Halyn), so perhaps orcas like Kotar are not notable? To me, they're as notable as those still living, given they were basically public performers for much/all of their lives. - Ageekgal 17:58, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

As I've learned more about how things work here on Wikipedia, I strongly think Halyn's page should exist. It will need work, but as one of (the only?) hand-reared captive Orcas, that's got to be notable. Wikigods jumped too quickly on that one. Further, all the Orca pages need work, and while I applaud SeaWorld officials who seems to be tidying up the articles, we need primary sources so others need to step up and contribute. Lastly, somewhere at least a footnote of the Orcas that have perished in captivity (in this case, at SeaWorld's) should be noted. I don't know if that belongs here or elsewhere, but it seems missing. Someone wanting to research Kotar, an adult male Orca that resided at the Sea World of Texas park for years, for instance, would expect to find that information on Wikipedia...at least a notation that he existed. - Ageekgal 02:42, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
