The O'Byrne Cup is a Gaelic Athletic Association competition between football teams from Leinster. The competition is named after Matt O'Byrne, a former Club Officer in Wicklow. The participants in the O'Byrne Cup are the twelve counties of Leinster and recently four further education Colleges from Leinster. The O'Byrne Cup 2008 champions are Dublin, who beat Longford in the final by a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-14
Recently an O'Byrne Shield has been introduced for teams knocked out of the first stage of the Cup also.

[edit] The O'Byrne Shield
The O'Byrne Shield is an inter county competition between the losers of the first round of the O'Byrne Cup. The competition began in 2006 with Longford winning in the final. The 2007 final was contested by Longford and Athlone IT and Longford won the game on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-7.
