This photo depicts governor Colgate Darden, who is long deceased . It is the official portrait taken when he was the president of the University of Virginia. No photographer is listed at the university web site that hosts this image file This image is of clear historic value. No free version could be produced because the subject is no longer available. It is also distinctly possible that the image has lapsed into the public domain or has always been in the public domain as a portrait of a president of a tax-funded, state university.
