Nová Lehota - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nová Lehota

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nová Lehota (German: Neuhau) is a village in Prievidza District in the Trenčín Region' of middle Slovakia. Since 1976 it has been a part of the municipality of Handlová.

Remarks

Until the 1945 it had been a flourishing community with 1500 inhabitants which predecessors might have found their roots even further then 500 hundred yeares back to the history. They used to have their own dialect, very detailed local topography with unique nomenclature, architectonically particular carpentry and masonry. All of these treasures are gone now. Original people are vanished after the WWII end's turmoil, traditions and language gone with them and the architecture is left unprotected in fragments even though some precious pieces has been preserved - almost half of the constructions have been demolished in the past 50 years.

[edit] History

Background; In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1487. Historically the village belongs to the Hauerland region of Carpathian and still has a German minority population that once dwelled in the Central and Eastern Europe. The origins of the German settlement go as far as the half of the 13th century when the necessity of colonisation of regions devastated by the Mongolian invasion of 1240/41 has arisen. During the late 13th century there were many German habitats founded in the Slovak region by diverse German nationalities like Saxons, Bavarian or others mostly from the north-east Germany. Foundation; Foundation of Neuhau is not primarily connected to the colonisation after the Mongol invasion. It is being dated somehow later, maybe even more than hundred years from the dreadful events which had been suffered to the area from Mongols. It is also generally suggested that the first inhabitants of place situated in the valley halfway from Handlová (Krickerhau) to Žiar nad Hronom (Heligenkreuz) in rather hilly surrounding were actually Sclavs. Supposedly there has been as much as 3 manors of the primary settlemnts of Sclavs latter to become extinct and fully displaced with Germans from either Handlová or Janova Lehota (Drexlerhau) directions. This suggestion has no material evidence, however.

[edit] Geography

The municipality lies at an altitude of 620 metres and covers an area of 18.214 km². It has a population of about 236 people.
