[edit] Previous by-election without last winning party
Bristol South East was a special case as the Conservatives were only awarded the seat the poll topping Labour candidate was ineligible. What was the last by-election where the party that actually topped the poll the previous time didn't stand? Perhaps a wartime by-election that swapped seats amongst National parties?
