Northbridge is the suburb of Perth, Western Australia best known for nightlife. The official suburb and its name date from 1981, prior to which the area was part of the Perth CBD, and was known by informal names such as "North of the Bridge" and "North of the Line".

[edit] Geography and transport
Located immediately north of the CBD, Northbridge is officially bounded by William St, Roe Street, Newcastle Street and the Mitchell Freeway.
The area is easily accessible by foot from Perth Train Station and Wellington Street Bus Station. It is served by a free CAT bus and also has a significant number of public car parks, both open and high rise.
The name Northbridge is often misapplied to areas and landmarks which are east of William Street and/or north of Newcastle St — such as like the Perth Cultural Centre — which are technically still part of the CBD.
[edit] General character
The area is largely comprised of a mix of commercial, public and residential properties.
Northbridge has a wide variety of cuisine from all over the world, including many Chinese restaurants, concentrated in Perth's official Chinatown, on Roe Street. It also has many other Asian, Italian and specialised seafood outlets.
There are also a plethora of drinking establishments and night clubs, many of them on James Street and Lake Street. Connections, a nightclub on James St, is the oldest continuously running LGBT nightclub in Australia, and has been in business since 1975.[citation needed]
[edit] History
Until the mid-20th century, Roe Street was known as a centre of prostitution; however, brothels and streetwalkers are now concentrated in areas adjoining Northbridge proper.
