No. 4 is the fourth album released by Stone Temple Pilots, on October 26, 1999, by Atlantic Records. The album combined elements of heavy metal, psychedelic rock, and alternative rock. No. 4 achieved platinum status, despite the lack of promotion due to singer Scott Weiland's one-year jail sentence in September 1999, shortly before the album's release. The song "Down" was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance at the Grammy Awards.
The album title, "No. 4", likely refers not only to the fact that this was Stone Temple Pilots' fourth album, but also to a particularly pure form of heroin known as 'No. 4', named for its stage of refinement. It is typically available only in the Western world, and even then it is prohibitively expensive to any but high-class users. Along with the recurring references to the heroin lifestyle on the album, the title attests to Weiland's struggle with such a high-profile drug.
