Nkawkaw (meaning "the red, red") is an important town in the Eastern Region of Ghana, with a population of over 50,000. It is considered a town of the people of Obomeng and Atibie.
It is situated on the road and former railway between Accra and Kumasi, and is considered the half-way point between these cities and transport hub for the area. It is also connected by road to the towns of Korofidua and Konongo. Nkawkaw is considered the main sub town of the Kwahus. Nkawkaw is the town you get to before you ascend to the Kwahu mountains. Historically it is not considered as a Kwahu town because its not on top of the mountain range. It is also home to the Nkawkaw Park stadium. Mpraeso is the capital of the Kwahu district.
