Niyyah

Niyyah is an intent one evokes in his heart to do an act of worship for the sake of Allah (God). Thus, because its seat is in the heart, it does not have to be pronounced verbally. That is why no wording for Niyyah is reported from the Prophet, nor from any of his companions.[1]
There is some debate as to the audible utterance of Niyyah. Most scholars agree that, since Niyyah is spoken from the heart, it does not have to be uttered. Additionally, there is no evidence that the prophet Muhammed ever uttered a Niyyah before commencing Salah (Muslim prayer).
Niyyah is also the solemn and sincere desire to do something for Allah. A Muslim must have Niyyah to commence the Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca). If a Muslim cannot go on the Hajj (for medical reasons, etc.), then Niyyah will suffice.
