Nils Malmros (born Nils Sigurd Malmros october 5th 1944 in Århus, Denmark) is a Danish film director. Son of Richard Malmros, professor of neurosurgery at University of Aarhus, and Eli Cold. He grew up in Århus.
Originally Malros wanted to be a furniture designer and applied for an architect school in Copenhagen, but were not admitted. Malmros began studying medicine in 1965, but was always more interested in directing films. He did graduate, but not until 1988 after 23 years of studies. In 1968 he made his debut with the amateur film A Strange Romance. The reviews were very bad and charaterised the film as a Truffaut plagiarism. Malmros was hurt, but was so committed to film making, that he financed his next movie Lars-Ole, 5c himself.
He is a highly unique director in Danish cinema, basing most of the stories in his films on his own childhood. Stylistically he is inspired by François Truffaut and the French New Wave.
In March 2006 Malmros declared that his next film, Kærestesorger, will be his last.
