Nickajack Dam

Nickajack Dam is a dam in Marion County in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It impounds Nickajack Lake. It is one of nine Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) dams on the Tennessee River.
The dam was notably built to replace Hales Bar Dam located six miles upstream. In the 1950s, it was discovered that Hales Bar has several leaks in its foundation. Upon determining that it would be far too costly to repair the structure, TVA instead decided to build an all new dam a few miles down stream.
Construction of Nickajack Dam began in 1964 and was completed in 1967. The Nickajack Lake has 179 miles ( 288 km) of shoreline and 10,370 acres (4,197 ha) of water surface. Nickajack Dam is 81 ft (24.7 m) high and stretches 3,767 ft (1148,5 m) long. It has a 600 ft (183 m) long lock that can lift as many as nine of large barges at a time. It also has the foundation for an additional 800 ft (244 m) lock. The electrical generating capacity of Nickajack is 104,000 kilowatts.
