Wyvill Richard Nicolls Raynsford, known as Nick Raynsford, (born January 28, 1945) was born in Northampton and educated at Repton School and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, from which he graduated with a Degree in History in 1966. He had been rusticated (suspended) for a year for night climbing, in the course of which he had displayed a banner against the Vietnam War between the pinnacles of King's College Chapel.[1]
He was first elected a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party in a by-election in 1986:
- Fulham (1986 - 1987 (lost to Conservative candidate Matthew Carrington)
- Greenwich (1992 - 1997)
- Greenwich & Woolwich (1997 - present)
His majority in the 2001 British General Election was 13,433 (receiving 60.52% of votes cast) [2] and 10,146 in the 2005 Election (receiving 49.2% of the votes cast). [3]
On May 29, 2002 he was appointed Minister of State for Local Government and the Regions with special responsibility for local government, English regions, electoral law, fire, health and safety and London.
Since the 2005 general election he has been a backbencher.
He described George Galloway as a demagogue, though in an interview conducted by Jeremy Paxman on Friday 6th May, the night of the 2005 General Election, Galloway said "I've never heard of Nick Raynsford."
Raynsford voted against the proposed 90 day detention of terrorist suspects in November 2006.
