Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center is a hospital in downtown Niagara Falls in the U.S. state of New York. It was founded in 1895 and has extended to be Niagara Falls's main health center. It has recently expanded its Emergency Room and is set to open in mid-February 2006 (ER1), with a newly added Heart Center. It also has satellite buildings known as the Summit Healthplex, The Hamilton B. Mizer facility, the Schoellkopf Health Center, a skilled nursing facility for short-term rehabilitation or long-term nursing and rehabilitation services. David J. Byers was the first president of the nursing home, which opened in 1972. Niagara Falls Memorial Center’s newly added Emergency Room is a 56,000 square foot building that is the home for the largest and most advanced Emergency Room in the Niagara area, along with a Heart Center that is quickly gaining national recognition for its work in the early detection, care and turnaround of heart disease. [edit] The Community at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center:

The community at NFMMC is a very friendly community. The patience and caring of the staff offer a comfortable feeling for the patients that visit NFMMC. Not only do they people of NFMMC offer good treatment and understanding for its patients but for their employees as well. NFMMC makes the working environment a pleasant place for its co-workers. The Family Medicine Residency Program has been in existence for over 26 years and was founded by Dr. Mel Dyster who is still active in the program. There are 4 residents in each year ( PGY 1, PGY 2, PGY 3) and the Residency Director is Dr. Laurence Plumb and the assistant director is Dr. Michael Elliott. The program is under the guidance of the State University of New York at Buffalo ( chairman of the Dept is Dr. Thomas Rosenthal ) and graduating residents receive a diploma from the University. The residents take their board exams with the American Board of Family Medicine at the end of their training to become Board certified family physicians. Medical students from UB are actively involved in their training at the Family Practice Center at 501 Tenth St Niagara Falls and work along with the residents caring for patients. Family practitioners are trained to care for all ages and sexes from birth to death and represent the most cost effective point of contact for patients entering the health care system. Since Niagara County has the highest incidence of Coronary Disease of any county in the entire U.S. it is a focus of research with a lot of new technology centered at the heart center including a 64 slice CT angiography machine, a PET scanner, a brand new ER with all Electronic Medical Records both in the ER and now being installed at the FP Center as well a dedicated staff and supportive administration. The residents learn preventive care in this high tech setting and develop excellent skills with disease prevention. The email of the family medicine director is LAURENCE.PLUMB@NFMMC.ORG.
