[edit] Infobox fix

I am not sure if this is what it is supposed to be:

42.7 km² Population (2006) 14 million (estimate) Population National Capital Region = 20 million area_magnitude=1 E9

Density {}/km²

This appears in the box at the beginning giving the statistical information. It needs to be fixed. -Wayfarer247 May 14, 2005

[edit] Pronunciation

Somebody should add the pronounciation of delhi as (delli), can any body put that up ? --Girish 13:09, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] When did building begin?

Resolved. Requested info added to article

This article is a bit confusing:

...built from 1912 to become the new capital of British India, eventually replacing Calcutta on February 10, 1911.

When did the building begin? Did the British establish the city after already making it the capital of British India? I think there must be a typo here -- maybe 1912 should be 1902? -- Tlotoxl 11:32, 21 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Fixed. - Patrick 12:11, 21 Aug 2003 (UTC)

[edit] Disambiguation

As I said on Talk:Delhi, could someone sort out the precise differences between Delhi (the city, not the union territory) and New Delhi and make them clear in the entries? -- till we *) 12:18, Aug 21, 2003 (UTC)

 • I think New Delhi does deserve an article. with more importance on the natinal administrative functions and the delhi page can be with a perspective on the city by and large. 203.94.241.97 10:21, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Agreed. There should be a relatively brief article on New Delhi that talks about its construction by the British and perhaps about the administrative Division between New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). All historical details should be put in the main [[Delhi] article. Anurag Garg 10:53, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Statehood

"Now there are plans afoot to give New Delhi complete statehood."

eh? Does this refer to Delhi NCR?, and if so it should be moved to the Delhi article. Imc 17:34, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, it refers to the Delhi NCT. I've removed it from here. -- Paddu 08:39, 27 Feb 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Population

As of 2000, New Delhi's poulation is 11,680,000.

Completely inaccurate. That's the population of the Delhi metropolitan area. bob rulz 09:55, Oct 30, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] POV fix

I've reverted to 217.231.13.99's version to get rid of the vandalism by 70.16.0.24. --JoshRaspberry 10:35, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism isn't the right word. But the addition by 70.16.0.24 was ungrammatical POV that didn't fit with conventional wikipedia formatting anyway. --JoshRaspberry 10:40, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Migrate the information

[edit] Partial merge proposal

I think that the information from the New Delhi page should be migrated to the Delhi page, then New Delhi should be about Imperial Delhi, designed by Lutyens, Center of Government etc. It seems to me that a lot of the links from the New Delhi page are redirected to Delhi anyway?

[edit] Crime

I believe the high crime rate of the city, in particular sex crimes, is worth a mention once the article is expanded.

_ _ _ Hello i do not agree with the stament above.New dheli is not that much of a sex city.

it is worth mention. Google it and see the number of searches!--59.182.44.79 06:10, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Material more suited for Delhi article

More stuff has crept into this article that properly belongs in the Delhi article (and mostly is there). Removing it from this article, and doing some tidy up. There is still material that may not be applicable here that I'm not sure about. In particular, should the 'Independent India and Autonomy' section also be moved to Delhi? Imc 20:35, 11 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cleanup tags

expand

October 2005

(tags moved from the main page; I don't disagree with them, but it's not obvious to me what particular shortcomings the article has, and the talk page is the best place to discuss that Enchanter 22:00, 24 November 2005 (UTC))

Actually, the tags do belong on the main page--discussions for what can be improved can be put on the talk page. Thanks! Doesn't matter either way, the article is a lot better now. Tamarkot 21:43, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox cleanup

The infobox is a bit unclear when it comes to area, population and density. Could someone clean it up?

[edit] Languages

Hindi is the official language of Delhi. Both Punjabi and Urdu are second official languages of Delhi. That's why there are three languages listed in the introduction. Apart from English, no other language has official status in Delhi, so please don't add them. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 19:55, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Ok. Marathi is only official language in Maharashtra.Still Hindi is (unfortunately) wide spoken here.So i look ur gesture as demeaning the other languages of India. I also wonder why Punjabi is official language inDelhi why so?If Punjabi can be why isnt Marathi and Tamil?

Well, Punjabi is an official language of Delhi because a significant portion of the population is Punjabi. Also, historic Punjab used to border Delhi. I can't say Delhi has ever bordered Tamil Nadu :P Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 22:45, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes, english does not enjoy the primary status even though we hightech gurus think that way! I just replaced english from the primary spot with hindi. I don't think there is any city in INDIA that has a english in the primary state. I though agree its very popular but we techies are in very low minority. thevikas (talk) 17:05, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] External Links

Hi, I had put the link to Delhilive.com in the external links categories which was removed from the page. I beleive I added the link in the right category of the site consifering the fact that the site encoruages people to contribute and share information. Please let me know if someone thinks otherwise and why?

[edit] Pictures

Although the length and content of this article itself is dismissable, the photos on the page are also quite unpleasing to the eye. For example, some of them are blurry, the subject is covered in haze, and the skies are brown. I myself do not live in Delhi, and cannot take new pictures. However, if we can all try to improve the pictures it will make a big difference. Also, in addition to the map in the city infobox on the page, we can have some picture of New Delhi, or some seal or emblem or something. For example, if you look at the Taipei page it has a picture of a famous landmark, along with the seal, etc. of Taipei. -Vamooom 20:21, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Parliament

Does not the right to information act give indian citizens access to documents on Indian govt websites. Can we use this image instead of the one with the tree covering half of it?

[edit] Copyvios

It seems that some copyvios are being made inadvertently by user:Nikkul. He added the text: "Delhi is a cosmopolitan city due to the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural presence of the vast Indian bureaucracy and political system, and expanding economy. There are more than 160 embassies and an ever-growing expatriate population." This is a direct cut and paste from the website: World Wind Energy. Please do not cut and paste. Thanks. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 04:58, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Scope of this article

It is very important that editors understand the scope of this article before adding material to it. The article is on the district of New Delhi which is the seat of the GoI and not of the entire metropolis of Delhi. Please discuss. --Lokantha 06:20, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Parallel

"the Sansad Marg, which runs parallel to the Rajpath."

I don't think it does, actually. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bitbut (talkcontribs) 00:50, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Why is Delhi called NEW Delhi?

Why is it called NEW Delhi

New York was named after York in England

New Jersey was named after Jersey Island in the English Channel

New Delhi named afer Delhi in?????? —Preceding unsigned comment added by {} (talk • contribs)

It's named after Delhi in India. --P3d0 (talk) 13:39, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

A recent edit has moved an image in such a way as to disrupt the flow of the page at 800x600. What was the reason for moving it up? --P3d0 (talk) 17:53, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

The reason for moving it up was to keep it from overflowing into the other section. Keep in mind that your view is large text and that it differs from the way most computers view the page. On my computer, as on most computers, the section formatting is perfect. Nikkul (talk) 18:13, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
I had forgotten I was using nonstandard fonts. Sorry! On the left is the page after your edit, with a standard font size. I agree that having the images interfere with other sections is undesirable. --P3d0 (talk) 18:31, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Page appearance after the edit with small fonts. The text is squeezed between the images.

I still dont think thats standard way the site is viewed. Most computers have a different view than yours. Nikkul (talk) 05:33, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Shouldnt the article be having the street map? -- PlaneMad|YakYak 09:36, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
