The New York TRACON (N90) is located at 1515 Stewart Avenue, Westbury NY, 11590. A Terminal Radar Approach Control, or TRACON, is responsible for descending airplanes from the ARTCC and lining them up for landing at their destination airport, as well as climbing departures before handing off to the ARTCC.

The primary responsibility of the New York TRACON is the safe, orderly, and expedicious flow of arrival, departure, and enroute traffic. N90 is responsible for three major airports - John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport. Additionally, N90 is responsible for dozens of smaller but busy fields, including Long Island MacArthur Airport, Teterboro Airport, and Republic Airport.

The New York TRACON is one of six "Large TRACONs" currently existing throughout the United States. The others include the Atlanta Large TRACON, the Boston Consolidated TRACON, the Potomac Consolidated TRACON, the Southern California Consolidated TRACON, and the Northern California Consolidated TRACON.

[edit] Area Breakdown

The New York TRACON is divided into five Areas of Specialization. Normally, a controller will certify and remain current on all the sectors in one area. A controller will usually be assigned one area and remain within that area for his entire career at the TRACON. However, controllers frequently switch Areas of Specialization for various reasons. The areas are as follows:

LaGuardia Area - The LaGuardia Area owns airspace over and around LaGuardia Airport. The LaGuardia Area has the second highest traffic count in N90. The LaGuardia Area can open a maximum of 6 operational radar positions. The LaGuardia Area is responsible for arrivals and departures at LaGuardia, as well as many smaller surrounding fields.

Kennedy Area - The Kennedy Area owns airspace over and around the John F. Kennedy International Airport. The Kennedy Area can open a maximum of 5 operational radar positions. The Kennedy Area is responsible for arrivals and departures at Kennedy Int'l and Republic Airfield.

Islip Area - The Islip Area owns airspace over and around the Long Island MacArthur Airport. The Islip Area can open a maximum of 7 operational radar positions. The Islip Area is responsible for arrivals and departures at Long Island MacArthur Airport, as well as many surrounding fields.

Newark Area - The Newark Area owns airspace over and around the Newark Liberty International Airport. The Newark Area has the highest traffic count in N90. The Newark Area can open a maximum of 7 operational radar positions. The Newark Area is responsible for arrivals and departures at Newark Liberty Int'l, as well as at many surrounding fields.

Liberty Area - The Liberty Area is primarily a High Departure area. The majority of departures from New York Area Airports are handled initially by the Area which has jurisdiction over that airport, then are handed off to the Liberty Area for further climb and transfer to the ARTCC. All New York Area departures that will enter New York ARTCC airspace are handled by the Liberty Area, and about half of all departures that will enter Boston ARTCC airspace are handled by the Liberty Area.

N90 is bordered by the following facilities:

  • Providence TRACON (PVD)
  • Bradley TRACON (Y90)
  • Philadelphia TRACON (PHL)
  • McGuire RAPCON (WRI)
  • Allentown TRACON (ABE)
  • Wilkes-Barre TRACON (AVP)
  • Binghamton TRACON (BGM)

N90 is overlied by both of the following ARTCCs:

[edit] Sectors

  • EMPYR - 1D - 127.3
    • The EMPYR sector is primarily a South Arrival sector for LaGuardia arrivals. This sector is responsible for arrivals via LIZZI from ZNY and via KORRY from ZDC. This sector must also handle occasional handoffs from adjacent TRACONs such as PHL and WRI. This sector must sequence and descend traffic from these streams and hand off to Final.
  • HAARP - 1V - 120.8
    • The HAARP sector is primarily a North Arrival sector for LaGuardia arrivals. This sector is responsible for arrivals via VALRE and NOBBI from ZBW. This sector must sequence and descend traffic from both streams and hand off to Final.
  • Final Vector - 1F - 134.95
    • The Final Vector sector is responsible for issuing all approach clearances into LGA and establishing the final landing sequence for IFR arrivals. This sector accepts LGA arrivals from EMPYR and HAARP, descends and aligns them for the runway in use, and transfers the aircraft to LGA Tower.
  • NOBBI - 1X - 126.4
    • The Arrival sector for White Plains (HPN) arrivals. This sector owns east of HPN from the surface to and including 4000, and varying altitudes to the north and south. This sector accepts arrival handoffs from Boston Center, descends and aligns them for the runway in use, and transfers the aircraft to HPN Tower.
  • Departure - 1L - 120.4
    • The Departure sector is responsible for all departures from LGA. This sector will radar identify all LGA departures, issue a climb and initial turns on course, and hand off to the appropriate Liberty Area sector. Depending on the flows in use, certain departures may be handed off to other areas before being transferred to the Liberty Area.
  • NYACK - 1Y - 120.55
    • The Initial Departure sector for all departures from White Plains (HPN). This sector owns airspace approximately 20 miles Northwest of HPN from the surface to and including 11,000, and airspace east of HPN at varying altitudes.

[edit] Sectors

  • North Departure - 52 - 118.17
    • The North Departure sector is responsible for taking departures from the other four areas, climbing them, turning them on course, and handing off to New York Center. The North Departure sector is responsible for departures routed via GAYEL, HAAYS, NEION, COATE, and SAX.
  • East Departure - 56 - 126.8
    • The East Departure sector is responsible for taking departures from the other four areas, climbing them, turning them on course, and handing off to Boston Center. The East Departure sector is responsible for departures routed via GREKI, MERIT, BAYYS, SOARS, BDL, V91, and V487.
  • South Departure - 58 - 124.75
    • The South Departure sector is responsible for taking departures from the other four areas, climbing them, turning them on course, and handing off to New York Center. The South Departure sector is responsible for departures routed via RBV, ARD, WHITE, DIXIE, and V16.
  • West Departure - 54 - 120.85
    • The West Departure sector is responsible for taking departures from the other four areas, climbing them, turning them on course, and handing off to New York Center. The West Departure sector is responsible for departures routed via ELIOT, PARKE, LANNA, and BIGGY.
  • Catskill - 5H - 132.75
    • The Catskill sector is primarily responsible for arrivals and departures at Dutchess Co (POU) and Stewart Int'l (SWF). This sector is also responsible for many small but busy satellite airports, as well as many overflights to and from N90 airports. Because of the varying types of aircraft and operations, this sector can become extremely complex.

Each area in N90 is separated from the others geographically. Upon entering the operations room, the LaGuardia Area is located along the right wall. The Islip Area is located along the left wall, and the Newark Area is located along the far left wall. The Kennedy Area is located along the far wall between the Newark and LaGuardia Areas. Additionally, the Liberty Area is located in the middle of the room, adjacent to the Traffic Management Unit (TMU). Beige lockers can be found behind both the Islip and Kennedy Areas (opposite ends of the room). A large American flag is mounted on the wall behind the Kennedy Area.
