New York State Route 338 was the designation for two routes over several decades. The first routing was entirely in the village of Schuylerville. The route went along Burgoyne Street and Monument Road in Schuylerville, beginning at U.S. Route 4 and New York State Route 32 and ending at an intersection with New York State Route 29. This alignment of 338 was deleted from the highway system in 1980 being replaced by Saratoga County Route 338.
However, the 338 designation was reused that year for another route, this time in nearby Washington County. The route was in the Washington County towns of South Argyle and East Greenwich. The route began at an intersection with New York State Route 40 in South Argyle and headed eastward. The route turned to the south and terminated at an intersection with New York State Route 29 in East Greenwich. The route was killed off on September 1, 1996 and is to this date, is maintained by the county as Washington County Route 49. Washington Route 49 is also now known as Old State 338.

Route 338's first alignment began at an intersection with New York State Route 29 in Schuylerville. The highway headed to the southeast, passing over small hills for most of its length. After turning to the east, Route 338 passed the Cemetery of the Visitation BMV before terminating at an intersection with New York State Route 32 in Schuylerville.[1]

Route 338's second alignment began at an intersection just south of South Argyle. The highway headed eastward, passing over hills and intersecting with local roads. As Route 338 headed towards a small pond, it intersected with Washington County Route 48. Just after the pond, the highway turned southward, passing Browns Mountain to the east. Route 338 then passed Carter Pond, terminating at an intersection with NY 29 on the banks of the Batten Kill River.[3]

The first alignment of Route 338 was assigned in the 1940s in Schuylerville.[citation needed]. That alignment remained intact until April 1980, when the state of New York turned over control of the road to Saratoga County, which reassigned it as CR 338.[2] However, the state moved the designation onto a highway in Washington County. This remained intact for sixteen years, when in September 1996, the state turned this alignment over to the county as well. Route 338 became known as Washington CR 49.[2]
