New York State Public High School Athletic Association

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is the governing body of interscholastic sports for many schools in New York.[1] It consists of 768 member high schools from the state divided into 11 numbered sections.[2]It is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations as well as the New York State Federation of Secondary School Athletic Associations.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Inc. is a non-profit, voluntary, educational service organization composed of public, parochial, and private schools dedicated to providing equitable and safe competition for the students of its member schools. Membership is open to secondary schools providing interschool athletic activities for boys and girls in grades 7-12.

The NYSPHSAA is divided into eleven sections by geographical areas:[3]
- Section 1: Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester
- Section 2: Capital District
- Section 3: Central New York
- Section 4: Southern Tier
- Section 5: Genesee Valley
- Section 6: Western NY
- Section 7: Champlain Area
- Section 8: Nassau
- Section 9: Orange, Sullivan, Ulster
- Section 10: St. Lawrence Area
- Section 11: Suffolk
Each section is further divided into classes, by school enrollment size.
Typically, each section holds a sectional championship in each sport and class. The sectional champions then meet to determine the state champion in each class.
