[edit] Route description

Route 182 begins at a concurrency with Route and County Route 517 in Hackettstown. It passes by the Minebrook Golf Club. Known as Mountain Avenue and concurrent with County Route 517. It intersects Shelley Avenue and Mall Lowe's Lane. It proceeds north, soon intersecting East Avenue. It then intersects Vans Drive and then Victoria Lane. Route 182 then intersects Bells Lane and Water Street before intersecting Little Street. Route 182 ends at Route 57/County Route 517 in Hackettstown.[1]

[edit] History

Route 182 was originally defined as part of pre-1927 Route 12, but was not taken over by the state, instead remaining county-maintained. In the 1927 renumbering it became part of Route S24. Route 24 was defined to run directly from Schooley's Mountain west to Penwell, where Route S24 would end, but the direct route was not improved, and instead Route 24 was signed to Hackettstown, where it met Route S24 at the current south end of Route 182.[2]

In the 1953 renumbering, Route 24 was defined to use the former Route S24 to Hackettstown and then head south along what had been a temporary alignment. The short piece of former Route S24 north of new Route 24 was assigned the Route 57 designation, and was taken over by the state that year.[2]

On October 9, 1969, the routes were again renumbered. Route 24 was truncated to Hackettstown, with the rest of Route 24 west to Phillipsburg becoming Route 57. The old Route 57 however did not retain its number, as plans were made for a bypass of Hackettstown, continuing Route 57 beyond that intersection to U.S. Route 46 east of Hackettstown. Instead, Route 182 was assigned to the former Route 57.[2]
