New Era University (NEU) is an educational institution in the Philippines, run by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC). Its main campus is in # 9 Central Avenue, New Era, Quezon City, in the Central Office Complex of the INC. It has several branches around the Philippines, including one in San Fernando City, Pampanga, in Lipa City, Batangas and in General Santos City, South Cotabato.
Founded in June 17, 1975, it was known as the New Era Educational Institute, and was located in Echague, Quiapo, Manila, along Carlos Palanca St. It initially offered only secondary education (high school) but later expanded in 1977 to serve technical and vocational courses under its Center for Livelihood and Skills Training (CLST). It also offers Graduate (i.e. Master's and Doctorate) courses.
In 1981, it was renamed New Era College after the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECS) granted collegiate status, and later in June 1995, to its present name, New Era University, when the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted university status.
In 1982, New Era College held its first commencement exercise and conferred the degree of Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Industrial Education, and Business Administration on twelve graduates.
The graduate School was established during the school year 1983-1984 offereing the course masters of Arts in college Teaching. The programs Bachelor of Elementary Education and Bachelor of Secondary Education also started this year. And in 1984, New Era College opened its Preschool and Elementary Department.
On May 10, 1986, Eraño G. Manalo inaugurated the new and permanent campus of New Era College along St. Joseph St., Milton Hills Subdivision in Diliman, Quezon City. In view of the peace and order problems surrounding the vicinity of the Manila campus, the High School Department and Non-Formal Education unit transferred to the new campus in Diliman. This brought together all the departments of the College under the new four-storey building.[1]
At present, it is still run by the INC for the educational needs of the members although it does accept enrollments from non-members as well. Under the university umbrella, it runs the College of Evangelical Ministry, where INC trains male members to become ministers.
Other colleges include: The College of Engineering and Technology, College of Nursing, College of Business Administration, College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Education, also the College of Law and School of Graduate Studies.

New Era University is affiliated with the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities(NAASCU),[citation needed] which is an athletic association of colleges and universities in the Philippines. It was established in 2001.
Also, this University is an active member of Philippine Association for Technological Education (PATE).
Intent on widening its network with universities, SEAMEO INNOTECH signed a Memorandum of Understanding with New Era University.
Hudyat is the official publication of New Era University. It is written in English.
[edit] Recent Academic Developments
New Era University submitted itself to voluntary accreditation. Today, four programs of the University enjoy Level II step 1 reaccredidation with the benefit of full curricular deregulation (Master of Arts in Education, Business Education and Administration courses, Arts and Sciences Courses, and Education Courses).
Side by side with its academic functions, NEU also fulfills its socio-civic responsibility towards the larger community that lies beyond its walls. The students, faculty and staff members, and administration all do their share in conducting community extension services. [2] Another project is the Balik-Aral Program for out-of- school youths conducted by NEU in close coordination with the Department of Education Culture and Sports, now the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Iglesia ni Cristo Social Services Department. This program brings classes for the out-of-school youth right in their own vicinity using the local facilities of the Church, the expertise of NEU-trained teachers and the teaching-learning modules from DepEd.
With the CHED implementation of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) in June 2002, NEU received commendations from town mayors and community leaders for its implementation of all three NSTP components: Literacy Training Service, Community Welfare Service Training, and Reserved Office Training Corps. [3]
[edit] Issues
The Iglesia Ni Cristo's headquarters is on Commonwealth Avenue in Manila's capital district, Quezon City. They have a large cathedral there, as well as a college and a hospital (New Era General Hospital) - the New Era University. Although New Era University is a non-sectarian, co-educational institution, as much as possible, administrators prefer that majority of its students are members of Iglesia Ni Cristo. [4]
