WikiProject Greater Manchester Announcements
[edit] About me on Wikipedia
In general I’m a content adder, adding new information and sourcing information already present. This means that I’m not so hot on MOS – as many who’ve worked with me on an article could tell you – but I am, for the sake of others, trying to improve. Oh, and I mostly edit articles related to Greater Manchester.
[edit] Did you know?
For me, the best part about Wikipedia is finding out a lot of interesting stuff (about where I live) when researching for Wikipedia that I probably wouldn’t know about otherwise:
- Manchester has castles! (Buckton Castle, Bury, Rochdale, Stockport, and Watch Hill Castle to name a few)
- There are 2 known Roman forts in Greater Manchester, both dating to 79AD: Mamucium and Rigodunum.
- Roman coins have been found in Sale.
- There are 46 Grade I listed buildings in Greater Manchester, and Oldham is the only borough not to have one.
- Suspected sherds or Roman pottery were found in Hale Barns where Holy Angels’ Church is today, but were lost before the find could be confirmed.
- There are 2 churches dedicated to St Werburgh in Warburton.
- Old Trafford Cricket Ground was originally built for Manchester Cricket Club not Lancashire County Cricket Club.
- Dunham Massey had over 100,000 visitors in 2006.
- The Broadheath industrial area was founded in 1885 by the Earl of Stamford.
- There was no reference to Altrincham before it was granted its Royal Charter in 1290, indicating the settlement was founded in 1290.
- During the Industrial Revolution, the textile industry did not develop as quickly in Trafford as in the rest of Greater Manchester because the main land owners were reluctant to invest in building mills.
and a lot more…
