[edit] Background and writing
This song composed by Giorgio Moroder with lyrics by Keith Forsey, along with other "techno-pop" treatments to the soundtrack are not present in the German version of the film, which features Klaus Doldinger's score exclusively.
In 1984, the single peaked at #4 in the UK singles chart and at #6 in the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
As a reference to the film and its title, the song has no distinctive beginning, nor an end. While many songs fade out, NeverEnding Story also fades in, thus making it "never ending".

[edit] Covers
The American theme song has been covered by Erasure, The Birthday Massacre, Creamy, Dragonland, New Found Glory and violinist/singer Omar Lopez. For The NeverEnding Story II the song was performed by Joe Minler during the closing credits. This version was a guitar driven song and is now considered to be a rarity. German techno group Scooter covered the song on their 2007 album Jumping All Over the World.
[edit] Parodies
The theme song was parodied in Homestar Runner when Homestar notices that a bottle of Mountain Dew he's up-ended has yet to run out, and proceeds to change the song's lyrics to "Neverending Soda".
