BULES - Birmingham Univeristy Light Entertainment Society.
Birmingham University Light Entertainment Society will be a non-profit making group dedicated to putting on shows for those who cannot normally travel to the theatre, taking plays to special needs schools, hospitals and retirement homes. We intend to be a relaxed and informal group and aim to encourage first time actors, directors and writers.
What is Light Entertainment:
Light Entertainment is a little bit of everything - singing, dancing, acting - all with the intention of being humorous and giving the audience a good time. If the audience isn't having a good time we've failed.
But its more than that - like any society we're about meeting new people and making new friends. We hope to see cross fertilisation of ideas between science and arts students, role-players and rugby-players, the southerners and northerners, undergrads and postgraduates... How will we achieve this? By letting people have fun. Our rehearsals won't be starchy sit in silence while the main characters emote things. We want everyone to come along, see your friends, chat about your plans for the weekend, and if we get the time we'll rehearse a scene or two? Is that the end of rehearsals? Oh, lets all go to Joe's then.
Why do we need a Light Entertainment Society:
- Having a production continually on the go to which people can join.
- No actor left behind - everyone who wants one can get a part.
Objectives:
- Bring drama to people who otherwise wouldn't see it (schools, old people's homes, respite centres).
- Promote new talent in directing, writing and producing by having a relaxed, amature atmosphere.
- Encourage people from non-traditional subjects (notably the sciences) to take part in drama.
This Year:
- Social event at start of term, introduce Light Entertainment to Birmingham - maybe invite some VOLES to come.
- Valentine's event: Dissing valentines - Rocky Horror?
- Large, main production at the end of term (10/11th week).
- Maybe something in the summer (garden show) if cast avaliable.
- possibly a number of smaller shows with a framing story.
