National heroes of Nepal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

National Heroes of Nepal (Nepal ko Rastriya Bibhuti haru in Nepali) is a list of, including those from ancient or medieval times, who were selected to their ranks posthumously by a commission headed by famous liteurate Bal Krishna Sum and appointed by the king Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, in 1955. The commission was directed to make nominations on the basis of their contributions to the nation, its influence and consequences. On these regards, the commission nominated people by their contributions to the pride of the nation be it in religious, cultural or economic reforms, wartime bravery, to the cause of democracy, literature, architecture.

The title National Heroes Of Nepal is only offered posthumously and it is not a regular title or award, but conferred only upon the discussions of the commission now led by Nepal Rajakiya Pragya Pratisthana.

However, people like prominent thinker Naya Raj Panta have averred that the nominations could have been biased on their proximity to the king's intentions. For example, both Bhimsen Thapa and Jung Bahadur had been prime ministers and commanders of the armies, both had been involved in war but Jung Bahadur had gained territories for the nation while Bhimsen had lost; nevertheless, Jung did not receive the position. Similarly defeated commanders like Amar Singh Thapa, Bhakti Thapa and Balbhadra Kunwar were awarded but not victorious generals like Ujir Singh Thapa and Nain Singh Thapa. Similarly, for judicial reforms, Ram Shah was awarded, but not the king Jayasthiti Malla.
