National Tsing Hua University (traditional Chinese: 國立清華大學; simplified Chinese: 国立清华大学; Hanyu Pinyin: Guólì Qīnghuá Dàxué; Tongyong Pinyin: Guólì Cinghuá Dàsyué; Wade-Giles: Kuo-li Ch'ing-hua Ta-hsuëh; Taiwanese POJ: Chheng-hûa Tāi-ha̍k; Jhuyin Fuhao: ㄍㄨㄛˊ ㄌ一ˋ ㄑㄧㄥ ㄏㄨㄚˊ ㄉㄚˋ ㄒㄩㄝˊ; abbreviated as NTHU) is a university in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. It is one of the most prestigious universities in Taiwan,[citation needed] with strong reputations in science and engineering, especially computer science and electrical engineering. Nearby is Hsinchu Science Park, the heart of the computer industry in Taiwan. The university and neighboring National Chiao Tung University have been competing with each other on many fronts since the inception of both schools. This rivalry is best exemplified by the annual Mei-Chu Tournament (梅竹賽), a series of sports and games competitions, held in March. It is said the difference between NTHU and next door neighbor rival is that NTHU is like Athens while NCTU is like Sparta.
After the Chinese Civil War, academics and staff from Tsinghua University created the National Tsing Hua Institute of Nuclear Technology in 1955 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, which later became National Tsing Hua University. The newly established People's Republic of China removed all "National" appellations for all universities in mainland China to reflect the fact that all institutions under its jurisdiction would be public, while the university in Taiwan kept its old name.
The two Tsinghua Universities are not affiliated with each other, but both claim to be successors of the original Tsinghua University. As a result of this dispute, both universities claimed to be the rightful recipient of the funds from the Boxer Rebellion indemnity that was used to start Tsinghua University. This indemnity was awarded to the university in Taiwan.
It is birthday tradition during the warmer months to be tossed into Cheng Kung Lake.
