I'm done, now do Dompo! Two homerooms' worth of speakers, and I thought Laal was obscure. Mark, I changed some single quotes to doubles in the References section, because they were a mix, but now I see that you consistently use singles in the rest of the article. I cannot read the last letter of the word for 'yam': . I'm not sure whether this is a problem with my browser, but this is a high unicode designation, and so I would imagine that many others would have difficulty with it.

I've started using template:unicode where I can on other articles, as this helps MSIE6 display unicode properly. However, I tried the template on the 'tone' section, but it didn't do much good. Gareth Hughes 12:27, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

It was an error in the unicode entity; I should have used ̀ for the Low tone, I've corrected it. I've also added the unicode template, so it should display correct now. Thanks for pointing it out! — mark ✎ 12:49, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for that. I'm not sure that template:unicode is quite right yet. I'm seeing the stuff inside the template in Code2000 (which doesn't look good to me), and, because of the font change, MSIE6 puts a space between the stuff in the template and the stuff outside of it. Would it work if the entire text of each word went into the template? Gareth Hughes 13:16, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

You're right, the space looks ugly and placing the full word in the Unicode template solved that. In Mozilla/Firefox it looks good now; and also in MSIE6, probably because I don't have the Code2000 font. I always work with Firefox; never checked how the article looks in MSIE. Now that I see it, I think that the unicode template should be used in all example sentences containing non-Latin characters (sigh). Or would the ipa template (which accomplishes the same, as far as I know) be better? What's the difference exactly? — mark ✎ 13:47, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The current wikitext for both template:unicode and template:IPA is:

This calls template:IPA fonts which lists the fonts in order of preference:

Chrysanthi Unicode, Doulos SIL, Gentium, GentiumAlt, Code2000, TITUS Cyberbit Basic, DejaVu Sans, Bitstream Cyberbit, Arial Unicode MS, Lucida Sans Unicode, Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro, Matrix Unicode

There are problems with this font list. I find that AUMS produces the better text, but it does not have as good a unicode range as some of the fonts. Gareth Hughes 14:47, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. As I take it, the font order for IPA doesn't have to be the same as the font order for Unicode in general — a solution might thus be to use two different font lists. AUMS is very good for IPA in general (its only problem is the wrong positioning of the double articulation ligature, but that's easy to solve). Anyway, I will use the IPA template in this article since it is IPA after all. Do you think it is a good idea to create template:unicode fonts, use the present order there, and adjust the order in template:IPA fonts? — mark ✎ 22:02, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
